“Mysteries, conspiracies, hidden identities, and secret codes abound in this debut thriller, which shuttles readers between the modern day and Tudor England. As Mrs G’s quest for answers takes her to England, and then to France, Germany and Hungary, she finds herself drawn to Ethan, a mysterious handsome priest. Little does she know that Ethan is more than he seems. Mrs. G proves herself an engaging heroine. Meanwhile, her story is intertwined with that of the life of Bacon as the novel alternates between past and present, spinning the tale of Bacon’s conception, birth, youth, career, and death. A dense, theory-packed book that will appeal to lovers of historical conspiracies.”

really liked it

The Royal Secret investigates the claim that Shakespeare’s works were in fact written by Francis Bacon and that Shakespeare was an illiterate who provided a cover for Francis in order to protect his life. It is cleverly written to tell the story whilst simultaneously running a modern-day investigation by a fictional Mrs G. Not many books have me thinking about them when I’m not reading them but this one did. Recommended for anyone interested in history and real life cover-ups.

‘it was amazing’

This is a wonderful book. It took a little to get use to the writing style but ending up being great. A great historical story with a little mystery thrown in. It answered a lot of questions but there are still questions that I think we will never know for sure. I would recommend this book to others. I received this book from Goodreads giveaways.

This was a fantastic read! The blending of history, philosophy and contemporary events worked very well within an exciting plot. The characters are all well developed and John’s writing style is refreshing. I would highly recommend this book; especially to anyone that want’s to learn. …more

I really liked the story about Francis Bacon’s secret life. The historical aspects were well researched. However, I really didn’t care for the modern characters at all. They sort of ruined the story for me. They didn’t seem realistic and the dialog between them felt stilted and unnatural. The boo……more

WOW! this book truly makes you question theories we thought were set in stone. Not only in regard to Shakespeare and Francis Bacon, but a real eye-opener to the world as we ‘don’t’ know it! A fantastic read, supported by very interesting research material on the books website, plus the Pearltrees… …more

This story is fascinating and most compelling. Through a 21st century narrative we accompany Mrs. G on her quest to confirm her suspicions of actions and identities of several of the main players from late 16th / early 17th century England. Juxtaposed against the quest is the 16th century story o… …more

This book, although blending fact and fiction, highlights the truth of the true identity of Shakespeare. There is no doubt that sir Francis Bacon should wear the crown of English literature. Author, John Bentley, provides creditable evidence as to Francis Bacon being not only the writer of the pl… …more

The mixture of fact, hearsay and fiction makes it very compelling reading and if I was a bit sceptical before, it now convinces me that Francis Bacon was indeed the author of Shakespeare’s works.

Congratulations to the author on writing a splendid book.

Interesting conspiracy theory ala The Da Vinci Code. This one runs from Christ thru the Merovingians (though I question that bloodline, skipping from Christ’s love child straight to Merovich hundreds of years later), through the Tudor family and Shakespeare.

Still, a good conspiracy read. Lots of… …more
